Resident Story: Sarah

Sarah is a 25-year-old single mother to a 1-year-old son. Before coming to NUMAS Haus, Sarah struggled to stay on the right path. She experienced the death of her bother at the age of 17, which led her to use drugs and alcohol to cope with the pain. During this time, Sarah also developed friendships and relationships that were not always a positive influence.

The most damaging relationship was with her boyfriend whom she met when she was 19 years old. Sarah and her boyfriend both struggled with substance abuse, and Sarah was verbally and physically abused over the course of their 5-year relationship.

Sarah then turned to theft to make ends meet. She was eventually caught and served time in jail. At the age of 24, Sarah found out she was pregnant. She knew she needed to get sober for her own health, and the health of her baby. Sarah agreed to treatment and started working to better herself.

After treatment Sarah moved in with her sister, but quickly realized this was not a healthy living situation for her and her son. She was referred to NUMAS Haus by a former resident so she could leave her toxic living environment and get the support she needed to start new.

During Sarah’s stay, she gained independent life skills, mentoring, financial and budgeting skills, childcare and parenting skills, and help with job searching. Sarah and her son moved into their own apartment, and Sarah continues to meet with NUMAS Haus staff weekly. Together, they continue working on goals such as employment, budgeting, time management and so much more. Sarah states “NUMAS Haus was so welcoming. I felt that NUMAS Haus has helped me get on my feet more than any other program I have been in. The resources I have gotten since I have been here have been really helpful. I feel like I am finally ready and able to take the next steps in my life to provide for myself and my son.” Sarah also stated she felt safe and comfortable asking for help. She was able to connect to the resources she needed to be a successful mother and live indepently with her son.
