NUMAS Haus Expansion & Hope Grows Capital Campaign
Since opening its doors in August of 2016, NUMAS Haus has been dedicated to rehabilitating displaced women and children to help lessen the state of homelessness in the area. NUMAS Haus has assisted over 182 women and children, many of whom are still thriving and contributing to the communities in which they now reside. NUMAS Haus has shown nearly a 70% success rate with residents that have completed the program and secured stable housing. The opportunities provided at NUMAS Haus positively impacts women and children.

Housing for the Homeless
When a new family is welcomed to NUMAS Haus, they are provided with basic essentials. NUMAS Haus offers a clean and safe environment to help facilitate immediate change and growth. Historically there has been a waitlist of at least 1 individual, peaking in the summer of 2023 with over 10 women (with or without children) waiting for shelter.
Expanded Space
NUMAS Haus sees the necessity for expansion with an ongoing waitlist that extends the time families in need are homeless. The renovated living space in the newly acquired building will more than double our capacity and reduce the time women and children are on the waitlist for housing. Serving more of these families on a centralized campus creates efficiency in long-term administrative costs and an opportunity for shared programing.
Expanded Space
During the 90-day program at NUMAS Haus, residents receive an individualized case plan and one-on-one support from a case manager. Goals may include: problem solving and time management skills, connecting with community resources for education, employment, child care and housing, and moving toward independence. After residents transition into their own housing, they continue case management services for up to two years to support maintaining long-term housing stability and independent living beyond NUMAS Haus.

The total estimated budget for this project is $1,062,200.00 to be used in a three-phase plan over a projected 3 year period. Per our original charter and our mission statement, the function of NUMAS Haus is to provide short term housing for homeless women and children in the Brown County area with the specific goal of keeping the children in their same schools.
The NUMAS Haus Board is keeping historic preservation front and center in its renovation plans; we were given a tremendous gift from the congregation of First United Methodist Church and we aim to maintain the architectural integrity of the structure. The outside of the building will remain as it is; inside, the paneling, woodwork and stained glass will all be integrated into our remodeling plans to retain the original character.
Staff offices on the main floor have already been completed. Our goal is to raise the necessary funds for the housing phase within a 12-month period. When the financial goal is met we will begin renovation on the second floor. The very first upgrade will be a sprinkler system to bring the building into code for residential use. By working with architects and a fundraising specialist, we anticipate the second floor overhaul to be started in one year.
NUMAS Haus can currently serve three women with children at one time. The proposed renovation of the church will add housing space for an additional 5-6 families allowing us to more than double capacity.
The former Sunday School rooms on the second floor will be converted into private bedrooms for our residents, and the fireplace room will become a communal living area. We also plan on converting the “crying room” nursery on that floor into a designated play space for children and an ADA compliant bathroom. We hope to expand into the balcony area with a communal kitchen, business center, mudroom and a “command center” at the hub of the second level. We are also developing ideas to incorporate some of our space into community gathering areas. Our small stage downstairs and our beautiful sanctuary will lend themselves perfectly to community events.
We are planning on growing into the space. Approximately 6 months after securing total funding we hope to house our first family.
Donors: NUMAS Haus has and is operating as a cashflow positive organization. The continued expansion of NUMAS Haus is only possible through the generosity of the communities in Brown County. Local fundraising campaigns are responsible for supporting up to 85% of operating costs.
Grants: Presently grants are responsible for supporting approximately 10% of operating costs. We have already identified and are actively pursuing new grants, along with these current initiatives.
Volunteers: Volunteers have donated thousands of hours, providing unparalleled support for our residents while keeping costs down.
